{"id":355,"date":"2014-05-15T04:24:02","date_gmt":"2014-05-15T04:24:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tibetnature.lhasocialwork.com\/en\/?p=355"},"modified":"2014-07-30T14:26:13","modified_gmt":"2014-07-30T08:56:13","slug":"tibetan-jumps-to-his-death-to-protest-chinese-mine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tibetnature.net\/en\/tibetan-jumps-to-his-death-to-protest-chinese-mine\/","title":{"rendered":"Tibetan Jumps to His Death to Protest Chinese Mine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A young Tibetan stabbed himself and jumped to\u00a0his death from the roof of a building in Tibet\u2019s Chamdo prefecture on Wednesday after authorities tried to halt his protest against a Chinese mine being built in the area, Tibetan sources in exile said.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Phakpa Gyaltsen, 32, died instantly after throwing himself from a\u00a0building\u00a0in Dzogang (in Chinese, Zuogang) county&#8217;s Tongbar town, a Tibetan living in India told RFA\u2019s Tibetan Service on Wednesday, citing local sources.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After telling local Tibetans that he would \u201cdo something\u201d to oppose Chinese mining in Dzogang, Gyaltsen \u201cwent to the town center, climbed onto a high building, and called out for Tibetan freedom,\u201d the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWhen attempts were made to stop him, he stabbed himself twice and jumped off the building, dying instantly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tibet\u2014called Xizang, or Western Treasure, by China\u2014has become an important source of minerals needed for China\u2019s economic growth, and mining operations in Tibetan regions have led to frequent standoffs with Tibetans who accuse Chinese firms of disrupting sites of spiritual significance and polluting the environment as they extract local wealth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Chinese mining operations at a site near Madok Tso called Ache\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Jema began almost two months ago, an exile source in Europe said, also citing contacts in Dzogang.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThey claimed that they are working to build a dam, but in reality they are planning to mine in the area, the source said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSo the local Tibetans decided to stop the plan, and every day three Tibetans were sent to guard the area, working in rotation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u00a0Detained<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some of those watching the site were later detained by police in Tongbar but were released after a few days, he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cLocal authorities also tried to convince area residents not to oppose th<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">e mining by offering each family 10,000 yuan [U.S. $1,603] in compensation,\u201d RFA\u2019s India-based source said, adding, \u201cBut the Tibetans argued that mining would have negative impacts [on the area].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cPhakpa Gyaltsen then told the local Tibetans that he would do something himself so that they would not have to protest and cause problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gyaltsen, the elder son of the area\u2019s Choeshoe family, is survived by a wife and three small children, with another child on the way, he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u201cPhone connections to the area are now blocked, and it is difficult to learn anything more about what is happening,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sporadic demonstrations challenging Beijing\u2019s rule have continued in Tibetan-populated areas of China since widespread protests swept the region in 2008, with 131 Tibetans to date self-immolating to protest Chinese rule and call for the return of exiled spiritual leader the Dalai Lama.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Reported by RFA\u2019s Tibetan Service.
