{"id":2096,"date":"2018-09-10T11:43:51","date_gmt":"2018-09-10T06:13:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tibetnature.lhasocialwork.com\/en\/?p=2096"},"modified":"2018-09-27T10:53:32","modified_gmt":"2018-09-27T05:23:32","slug":"concerns-raised-chinas-push-increase-tourism-tibet-damaging-environment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tibetnature.net\/en\/concerns-raised-chinas-push-increase-tourism-tibet-damaging-environment\/","title":{"rendered":"TOURISTS DUMPING ON TIBETAN LAKE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2115\" src=\"https:\/\/tibetnature.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/news-pic.png\" alt=\"news pic\" width=\"797\" height=\"536\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tibetnature.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/news-pic.png 610w, https:\/\/tibetnature.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/news-pic-300x202.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 797px) 100vw, 797px\" \/><em>More concerns have been raised that China\u2019s push to increase tourism in Tibet is damaging the environment\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/em>Video footage has emerged of tourists dumping rubbish at Chaka Salt Lake, in Wulan County\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/freetibet.org\/about\/location\">north-eastern Tibet<\/a>.The lake is regarded as a site of natural beauty. <!--more-->Because of the way the sky reflects off the surface of the crystallised saline water it has been given the name \u2018Mirror of the Sky\u2019.<br \/>\nAs a result of the recent influx of tourists, around 40,000 per day during peak season, the area\u2019s pristine environment has been seriously degraded.<\/p>\n<p>Footage uploaded by tourists, which has been shared widely online, shows the edge of the lake littered with waste, mostly discarded plastic shoes which are used by tourists to walk over salt-sand.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, 200 cleaners are working at the site, collecting up to 12 tons of discarded rubbish per day.<\/p>\n<p>Local authorities have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/society\/article\/2157615\/hordes-tourists-damaging-chinese-salt-lakes-pristine-environment\">claimed<\/a>\u00a0that they will strengthen enforcement against such behaviour in the future.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-2096-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.freetibet.org\/files\/video%20convert.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freetibet.org\/files\/video%20convert.mp4\">https:\/\/www.freetibet.org\/files\/video%20convert.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>Through its state media outlets, the Chinese Communist Party regularly boasts of its efforts to protect Tibet\u2019s environment. However, many Tibetans and Tibet groups have questioned these claims in light of ongoing economic development and mass tourism.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these concerns, Chinese authorities have, in recent years, made a concerted efforts to increase tourism into Tibet.<\/p>\n<p>Qinghai Chaka Salt Lake Cultural Tourism Development Company has reported an increase in the number of tourists to the area.
