{"id":1330,"date":"2015-08-11T12:33:03","date_gmt":"2015-08-11T07:03:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tibetnature.lhasocialwork.com\/en\/?p=1330"},"modified":"2015-08-11T15:53:38","modified_gmt":"2015-08-11T10:23:38","slug":"winter-olympic-games-venues-in-china-pose-threat-to-beijing-nature-reserve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tibetnature.net\/en\/winter-olympic-games-venues-in-china-pose-threat-to-beijing-nature-reserve\/","title":{"rendered":"Winter Olympic Games venues in China &#8216;pose threat to Beijing nature reserve&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Outdoors enthusiasts have expressed concern that alpine sports venues might be built inside a nature reserve in suburban Beijing after the city was named host of the 2022 Winter Olympics.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Construction of the sites and future snow-making, they say, could damage an important &#8220;ecological barrier&#8221; that helps Beijing &#8211; a victim of chronic air pollution &#8211; ward off sandstorms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tibetnature.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/olympic-graphic.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1331 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/tibetnature.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/olympic-graphic-300x203.png\" alt=\"olympic-graphic\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tibetnature.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/olympic-graphic-300x203.png 300w, https:\/\/tibetnature.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/olympic-graphic-1024x695.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While the celebration of Beijing&#8217;s victory in bidding for the Winter Games was still underway on the weekend, hikers in Beijing waved goodbye in online forums to one of their favourite sites: the Haituo mountain range that straddles the city&#8217;s border with Hebei province.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The range comprises two peaks &#8211; Da (Big) Haituo and Xiao (Little) Haituo. Those concerned about the project found in official bidding documents that the 2,198-metre high Xiao Haituo, in Beijing&#8217;s Yanqing county, was the preferred site for downhill skiing events for the Games.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Trails for sledding events will be built lower down, at about the 1,000 metre mark.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An assessment by the International Olympic Committee last year said the venues and the Olympic Village at Yanqing would be &#8220;adjacent to the 4,600 hectare Songshan National Nature Reserve&#8221; and is part of the same mountain ecosystem with nearby ranges.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;This would impose a number of environmental requirements that would have to be taken into consideration during the detailed planning phase,&#8221; the assessment, which includes two photos, reads.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But the hikers were quick to discover some of the sites would be built inside the Songshan nature reserve, one of Beijing&#8217;s two national nature reserves, after comparing IOC photos, satellite images and official geological positions of the reserve.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Their online posts with detailed information were relayed over the weekend on major social media sites. Many internet users questioned why the Olympic venues had to be built inside a nature reserve.
